The problem

When your mind won't rest, your body stays on alert

The pace of modern life keeps the nervous system in survival mode. Even when you try to relax, your body doesn't feel safe enough to calm down.

It isn't a question of attitude or willpower. Your nervous system has been stuck in survival mode for a long time, and it learns by repetition, like a muscle: every practice teaches it that it is safe. Over time, that becomes your new natural response.

In short: Regulate Your Nervous System is a 6-week online course from Mindful Science with 42 guided practices of 10 to 15 minutes a day (notice, breathe, release, stabilize, integrate, new baseline) to help adults move from fight-or-flight toward calm. It is included in the membership with a 7-day free trial.

Why it works

Training, not momentary relaxation

Your body has two main modes: alert and calm. Alert mode, the sympathetic nervous system, releases cortisol and adrenaline when it senses a threat. Modern stress keeps it switched on chronically, even when there is no real danger.

The vagus nerve connects your brain with your heart, lungs and digestive system. Practices like slow breathing, body scanning and gentle movement send it a direct signal that it can lower its guard, and the rest-and-recover mode switches on.

With repeated practice, your nervous system learns to make that shift faster and with less effort. That is training.

Frequently asked questions

How do you regulate your nervous system?

Common, research-supported tools include slow breathing with a long exhale, body awareness and relaxation practices. Done consistently, they help the body return to calm more easily.

How long does it take to regulate your nervous system?

There's no fixed timeline. The course uses 6 weeks of daily practice because consistency matters more than quick fixes.

What are vagus nerve exercises?

They are practices such as slow exhale breathing, humming and gentle relaxation, often used to support the body's rest-and-digest response. They are not a medical treatment.

Do I need meditation experience?

No. The course is designed for beginners and for people with experience who want a more physiological, less esoteric approach.

What if I fall behind?

Nothing happens. You go at your own pace and can repeat any week as often as you need.

Does it help with anxiety, stress or sleep?

Those are often the areas people notice first when their nervous system is better regulated. It is a training practice, not a medical treatment: if you have a diagnosis, use it alongside your care.

How does the 7-day free trial work?

You create your account in the web app and get full access for 7 days. If you cancel before the trial ends, you are not charged. After that, the membership costs US$39 a year (about US$3.25 a month) or US$7.99 a month.
